Biden on China

It is widely known that there exists an ongoing tension between the United States and China regarding Ukraine. This tension is fueled by China's growing ties with Russia and its disputed claims over islands, which the UN recognizes as part of the Philippines' territory, a US ally in South East Asia. President Biden acknowledged the competitive nature of U.S.-China relations but stressed the importance of responsible competition during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders made progress on issues such as combating global illicit drug manufacturing, establishing communication and law enforcement coordination on counter-narcotics, and resuming high-level military communication.

The leaders also discussed the evolving AI industry, emphasizing the need to address risks and improve AI safety. President Biden reiterated the U.S. commitment to freedom of navigation, adherence to international law, and peace in the South China Sea and East China Sea, as well as the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the U.S. expressed commitment to Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression. On the Israel-Hamas conflict, the President affirmed U.S. support for Israel's right to self-defense and urged countries to prevent escalation. Human rights concerns in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong were raised, along with a call for restraint in military activities around the Taiwan Strait. President Biden also addressed ongoing concerns about China's unfair trade policies, non-market economic practices, and punitive actions against U.S. firms, affecting American workers and families.
