Suozzi on Immigration

Tom Suozzi emerged victorious in the race for the Third District New York seat against his opponent, George Santos. Suozzi's campaign centered on fundamental Democratic principles encapsulated in his "Ten Point Plan to Restore Sanity in Washington and Get things done." This plan addressed a range of policies, including defending reproductive rights, reducing gun violence, lowering prescription drug costs, repealing the SALT cap to aid the middle class, supporting Israel and Ukraine, tackling climate change, honoring veterans, safeguarding social security, and enhancing social services for K-12 education.

However, it was Suozzi's stance on immigration that starkly differentiated him from his opponent, Mazi Pilip, who aligned with Trump's stringent immigration policies of limited immigration, heightened enforcement, and restrictive border measures for asylum seekers. During the immigration debate, Suozzi took an assertive stance, criticizing Pilip for merely highlighting problems without offering viable solutions. Suozzi emphasized his experience in government and his ability to navigate complexities to enact meaningful change, contrasting Pilip's lack of substantive proposals.

Suozzi's approach to immigration included collaborating with Republican Congressman Peter King in 2019 to draft a Grand Compromise on Immigration, aimed at bolstering border security, addressing out-migration from Central America, and providing legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants residing and working in the United States. Additionally, in 2021, Suozzi proposed the "Ellis Island" plan to enhance border security and streamline migrant processing, demonstrating a commitment to tough immigration policies while also advocating for pathways to legal status for undocumented individuals who meet specified criteria.

Suozzi's victory in securing Santos' seat underscored the electorate's rejection of anti-immigrant rhetoric propagated by mainstream and conservative media. It reaffirmed that Americans prioritize values of freedom, integrity, and adherence to core principles, recognizing the nation's heritage as a melting pot shaped by immigrants. If the Democrats adopt Suozzi’s formula on Immigration, that might change the fate of Biden as once again, he can energize his forgotten base in the last four years of his presidency, the Immigrant vote.
