Why Ban Tiktok?

The notion of banning TikTok didn't merely arise during Nikki Haley's primary; it's been simmering in the background for some time now, even during the Trump administration. So, what drives politicians to push for TikTok's ban? Ostensibly, they cite national security concerns. Yet, if that's the case, there are alternative approaches, such as conducting thorough investigations into how TikTok handles sensitive user data and scrutinizing its privacy policies and structures. However, it's easier to garner support for a ban by stoking fears among Americans about their data being compromised. But doesn't this concern apply to US-based social media companies as well?

TikTok boasts a massive and thriving user base, and US-based companies would undoubtedly benefit from its ban as they technically can’t compete with loyal Tiktok users who just love the application. Another aspect is TikTok's role in providing direct access to real-time news and information often overlooked or filtered by mainstream media. It serves as a platform for self-expression and facilitates connections among people with shared passions and interests. For millions of Americans, TikTok serves as a source of income. Denying them this platform raises questions about whom the politicians truly serve: the voters who put them in power or the influential entities that sway their policy decisions.
