FDA’s Egg Recall
It’s time to check your recently bought eggs, FDA issued a general recall for fresh eggs under the brand Milo’s Poultry Farm and Tony’s Fresh Market, for potential Salmonella contamination. The recall covers all types (conventional cage-free, organic, and non-GMO chicken eggs) and sizes (M, L, XL, Jumbo). Recalled eggs were distributed to food service locations and retailers located in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. The FDA says that when a food contaminated with Salmonella is consumed, within 12 to 72 hours, illness can occur. Symptoms usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection and can last 4-7 days. Common symptoms includes, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, muscle pain, bloody stools in severe cases and dehydration from prolonged diarhhea. Most people recover without treatment, but severe cases, particularly in infants, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, may require medical attention. In rare cases, the infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream, leading to more serious complications.
As of September 6, FDA says that a total of 65 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from nine states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 23, to August 10. Of the 63 people with information available, 24 have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. FDA recommends: Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve recalled chicken eggs produced by Milo's Poultry Farms, LLC and distributed to restaurants and retailers in IL, WI, and MI. The surfaces and containers that had been touched by the recalled eggs should be carefully clean and sanitize. Consumers should check their refrigerators for any recalled eggs and throw them away. Wash hands, untensils and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs and raw egg containing foods. FDA also wants consumers to follow the safe food handling and advise on their site. And to immediately contact the health care providers if symptoms of Salmonella is detected.
