Debate Expectations
Tonight's CNN Presidential debate holds significant stakes and expectations. For President Biden, it's a critical opportunity to demonstrate that he remains sharp and in control, countering criticisms about his age, physical competence, and mental acuity, which many see as politically motivated attacks from the GOP. Biden, a seasoned politician and adept debater, must not only address concerns about his ability to handle the demanding responsibilities of running the country but also reassure his base and progressives unhappy with his foreign policies in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza that his next term will consider their needs and demands.
For Trump, there are also several key issues to address. His legal troubles will be top of mind for many voters. Instead of attacking Biden, Trump needs to focus on presenting his policies on the border, healthcare, the economy, and foreign policy, particularly regarding Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza, contrasting them with Biden's. This debate is Trump's chance to win over swing voters, independents, and dissatisfied Democrats by addressing their concerns and incorporating them into his campaign.
Additionally, the issue of Presidential immunity, on which the Supreme Court is expected to rule, presents an opportunity for Trump to explain its importance for the security and safety of a President's decisions and actions, even after leaving office.
Both candidates will be closely scrutinized for their policy positions on Israel, Ukraine, and Gaza, and any mistakes or minor blunders could sway votes and become next day’s news. Ultimately, the debate will come down to two key words: stamina for Biden and discipline for Trump. The CNN debate has the potential to significantly impact the currently stagnant campaigns of both parties.
