Austin Opens Up

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin addressed the past events surrounding his health, revealing that he underwent surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in December to treat prostate cancer. Complications from the surgery led to his hospitalization in early January, affecting his duties. Austin expressed regret for not informing President Biden about the diagnosis and the subsequent health challenges.

Acknowledging the mishandling of the situation, Austin admitted, "We did not handle this right. I did not handle this right." He took full responsibility and apologized to his teammates and the American people for not disclosing his cancer diagnosis and health situations promptly. He attributed his failure to disclose to a desire for personal privacy, stating, "I was being treated for prostate cancer, and my first instinct was to keep it private."

Despite the lack of transparency about his health, Austin emphasized that there were no gaps or negligence in his duties. Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks assumed his responsibilities during his absences, ensuring no risk to the department's command and control. Austin clarified, "At every moment, either I or the deputy secretary was in full charge."

Austin admitted to apologizing directly to President Biden for the delayed notification, expressing deep remorse for not informing him immediately about his diagnosis and treatment. He appreciated President Biden's understanding and support, stating, "He has responded with a grace and warm heart that anyone who knows President Biden would expect. And I'm grateful for his full confidence in me."

Reflecting on the experience, Austin acknowledged the sacrifice of privacy that comes with such a high-profile position. He emphasized the public's right to be informed about leaders facing health challenges that might impact their ability to perform their duties. Austin concluded, "The American people have a right to know if their leaders are facing health challenges, so a wider circle should have been notified, especially the president."
